The Gates is a site-specific art installation by Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The artists installed 7,503 metal "gates" along 23 miles (37 km) of pathways in Central Park in New York City. From each gate hung a flag-shaped piece of saffron-colored nylon fabric. The exhibit ran from February 12, 2005 through February 27, 2005.

NEW YORK STATE
Circa 1978
My favorite hiking trail in Harriman Park NY. I continue to travel back East and hike this trail.

Harriman State Park, located in Rockland and Orange counties, is the second-largest park in the parks system, with 31 lakes and reservoirs, 200 miles of hiking trails, three beaches, two public camping areas, a network of group camps, miles of streams and scenic roads, and scores of wildlife species, vistas and vantage points. Harriman State Park's major facilities include Lakes Welch, Sebago, Tiorati and Silvermine, the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area, Sebago Cabins and Beaver Pond Campgrounds.

THE WINNER
May 06
AKA The Empire State Building is a 102-story art deco skyscraper in New York City, New York at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York.

It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972.

Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building again became the tallest building in New York City.

The construction was part of an intense competition in New York for the title of the world's tallest building. Two other projects fighting for the title, 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building, were still under construction when work began on the Empire State Building.

Each would hold the title for less than a year, as the Empire State Building would surpass them upon its completion, just 410 days after construction commenced.

The building was officially opened on May 1, 1931 in dramatic fashion, when United States President Herbert Hoover turned on the building's lights with the push of a button from Washington, D.C.

Ironically, the first use of tower lights atop the Empire State Building, the following year, was for the purpose of signaling the victory of Franklin D. Roosevelt over Hoover in the presidential election of November 1932.

NEW YORK STATE - FALL WONDER
Same trail different angle. I’ve hiked this trail so often it is part of me. The smell of wet earth delights my senses. I used the image of this trail to relax during the birth process.

MY HAPPY PLACE
Oct 05
I have been hiking this trail since I was a teenager. It was one of the places I would escape to get away from suburbia in the shadow of the City. This is Harriman Park, Mid way up this trail is a swimming hole where the water rushes by and I went swimming with a water snake (once). Above that if you keep forging on you’ll come to one of the many lakes in this area.

IDAHO SONNET
Oct 2000
I was in Utah for an extended stay handling some unpleasantries. When all was handled and I could take some time for me, I drove up to my favorite camping spot. The family used to vacation there, camping for 3 weeks at a time. This is Bear Lake, the mountains and foliage behind Bear Lake. This is music to my soul.

A RAY OF HOPE AT GROUND ZERO
